Custom Car Window Decal Using Cricut Explore & Vinyl

Custom Window Decal Using Your Child's Artwork!

I’m super excited about this vinyl project. I see a lot of family themed car window decals on the road here in Hawaii. I’ve always wanted to get one, but didn’t want to settle for that generic stick figure design that everyone already uses… One stormy afternoon I asked my daughter to draw a picture of our family. I snapped a picture of it, cleaned it up in an image editor (I used photoshop), and imported it into my Cricut Explore Design Space and voila! I could not be any happier with the result!

Materials:

My daughter’s family drawing. Look at how cute her twin baby brothers are!

I used photoshop to adjust the contrast so it was more stark (easier to remove the background that way), placed my flying daughter level with the rest of us, and added a ballon she drew earlier for a water bottle project. I kept her brother floating though, because she said he was being carried by daddy :) For more details on how to do the photoshop part, refer to this post.

I saved this image with no background color as a .png file and uploaded it to the Cricut Design Space. PNG files save you a great deal of time because you don’t have to spend time cleaning it up in the Design Space.

I then realized that I did not know what size to make this decal. So I quickly went into the garage and measured the window area, being mindful about the window wiper blade. I did not want the wiper blade to go over the decals in case it some how could peel off all my hard work! I made my decal approximately 10 inches wide and 6 inches tall.

Here is how it looked after I weeded it. Sorry the pic is so blurry, I was too excited that I only snapped one picture before applying it to the car.
